Genital Warts Treatment

HPV is still incurable. Infection goes away without treatment in many cases. Treatment includes removing warts and monitoring them for the cancer cells development. Warts can be removed with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy), or laser. Surgical removal is also possible. The type of removal depends on the wart type. Possible side effects: local irritation, ulceration, and, sometimes, scarring. Warts can be eliminated or reduced by the interferon injection. The medication is injected into wart 3 times for several weeks.

External wart can be treated by creams or gels (podophyllin and trichloracetic acid (TCA)).

Treatment as imiquimod (Aladra) and podofilox (Condylox) can be self-applied and used 2-3 times weekly for a few weeks. The possible side effect is skin irritation.

Internal warts can't be treated this way.

As the virus lies dormant in skin cells, recurrence can occur after the treatment.

No evidence is given to prove that removing warts reduces HPV transmission but it's possible.

Genital Warts Prevention

The best way to avoid infection is barrier contraception. Routine Pap smears are recommended for sexually active people, that helps to detect HPV at an early stage and treat it effectively.
